The Devil’s Claw name comes from the appearance of the seed pod. It looks like a claw with “fingers” bent downwards and more bent upwards. The plant’s seeds are kept in protective pods until conditions are right for sowing and germination. The shrub grows in Southern Botswana, Namibia, Southern Africa. The fleshy tubers, which store water from the rainy season are used in herbal preparations.
